For all our obsessive focus on Trump, on the right and the left, Mike Pence is in many ways more emblematic of the sizable swath of the American electorate from which he draws his support. Outwardly pious, inwardly craven, he stands to the side or behind his chosen leader and watches the horrors unfold, firm in his faith that none of it will ever touch him. We’ve been hearing a lot lately about “deep fakes,” so let’s just call these #shallowfakes.
